INQUEST MESOTHELIOMA DEATH

Exposure to asbestos at local hospital led to craftsman death

An inquest in Portsmouth has heard that a hospital craftsman contracted mesothelioma after working at St Mary’s Hospital, Portsmouth for 22 years. Mr Geoffrey Goble was responsible for repairs and refurbishments at the hospital and was exposed to asbestos fibres ’on many occasions while in the workshop and on site in the hospital’.

His widow Janet said: ‘When he came home sometimes he was covered in white dust.  ‘The children used to run up to him when he came home from work.’ In a statement before he died, Mr Goble said that there was no protection from the dust and debris which contained asbestos.’ The coroner for Portsmouth and South East Hampshire recorded a verdict of death as result of an industrial disease.

Comment: Inquests of this kind bring home the importance of the current HSE asbestos campaign aimed at raising awareness of the ongoing risk from asbestos to building refurbishment and maintenance workers.
