Workman dies on London Underground network project
A workman engaged on a Birse Metro project, related to the London Underground Network, is understood to died on Christmas day following an incident in early December in Tottenham Court Rd. The workman suffered 60% burns when an underground power cable exploded. Our enquiries suggest he was trimming a pile cap with a concrete breaker at the time of the incident. He died in hospital on 25th December 2008.
Comment: Pile cap trimming has recently been the subject of an HSE campaign to reduce HAVS risk by encouraging a move towards pile cap trimming by alternative methods that do not involved use of hand held breakers. This incident reminds us that potentially fatal safety hazards are also involved in pile cap trimming addition to the longer term health risks.
