DRIVING FOR WORK

Driver jailed after ignoring Highways Agency Officers

A driver who collided with Highways Agency Traffic Officers while trying to breach a rolling road block has been jailed for nearly five months. Paul Stephen Simpson, aged 51, was convicted of dangerous driving, jailed for 140 days and banned from driving for 18 months. He will also sit an extended driving after disqualification ends.

Magistrates heard that Simpson ended up squeezed between the Traffic Officers’ high visibility four wheel drive vehicle and the central reservation barrier of the M6 near Tebay after trying to avoid the safety block. David Grunwell, Highways Agency Divisional Director, said ”this sentence sends out the strongest possible message that drivers ignoring the directions of Highways Agency Traffic Officers and putting other drivers and roadworkers at risk will feel the full force of the law. Traffic Officers have been introduced to cut congestion and improve motorway safety. Rolling road blocks are only ever used sparingly.”
