OLYMPIC SITE SAFETY PERFORMANCE

One million hours accident free at Olympics site

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has reported that the Olympic Park workforce has achieved another million hours without a reportable accident. The fifth time since the ODA gained possession of the Park in July 2007.

Chairman John Armitt said: ‘to complete a million hours without a reportable accident on a project of this size and complexity is challenging enough, so to do this five times is a real accomplishment. The ODA and all our contractors are dedicated to setting the highest standards and providing the very best working conditions, however this achievement is really thanks to the professionalism of every individual worker on the site.”

This news comes at the time HSE has announced that Stephen Williams the Chief Inspector of Construction (CIC) will be taking up the newly created post of Director for London and the Olympics. He will lead the health and safety regulation of the 2012 Games including the construction phase and will continue in the CIC role until the post is filled.

Comment: There are over 2,600 workers on the Olympic park site all of whom will receive a free breakfast in the canteens across the site. Incentives can play a useful part in securing safer projects. In the 1990′s one major project gave away a car in a prize draw every time the million hour landmark was reached. However, at least a free breakfast spreads the reward more widely and probably costs the same!
