LIFTING OPERATIONS PROSECUTION

Posted on 10th September 2008
Major contractor prosecuted after workman struck by falling panel

Brookfield Construction UK Ltd (formerly known as Multiplex Construction UK Ltd) and a sub-contractor have been ordered by magistrates to pay nearly £60k after a workman suffered a broken pelvis when he was struck by a falling glass panel. The injured person was standing on the rear of a lorry when an A-frame stillage containing glass panels was lowered and one of the panels fell causing his injuries.

The investigating HSE inspector said: “This incident once again highlights the need for contractors to ensure that all aspects of lifting and removal operations are fully planned and measures to work safely are clearly communicated to all workers.”

Comment: Many of the fatal and serious injuries on larger construction projects arise during lifting operations. There are three key elements to safe lifting operations: (a) proper planning of the operation resulting in a simple and job specific lifting plan (b) clear responsibilities and arrangements for implementing the plan on site and (c) robust supervision of operations in accordance with the plan. By ensuring that these three elements are included on each occasion lifting operations will safe and legal.
