Scaffold collapse injures three workers and contractor fined
A scaffoldolding contractor is to pay nearly £10k in fines and prosecution costs after a scaffold collapsed in June 2007. Three workers were erecting a scaffold when it collapsed onto the adjacent road, causing the workers to fall 6m. All three suffered serious injuries and members of the public using the pavement and road were put at risk.
Comment: The investigating inspector has commented that the contractor failed to provide a safe system of work, adequate training and supervision. Under CDM 2007, which was in force at the time, clients engaging such contractors need to be satisfied as to competence of scaffolding and other contractors. This type of incident has signifcant potential to cause multiple fatalities involving both construction workers and the public. Following on from our recent news item concerning HSE fatal investigation reports it would be helpful if additional publications (anonymised if necessary) could be made available by HSE with greater detail on the immediate and underlying causes of such incidents.
